SECONDARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS’ LEADERSHIP STYLE IN THE STATE OF SARAWAK



PROBLEM STATEMENT


Malaysia Education Development Plan (Pelan Pembangunan Pendidikan Malaysia) 2013-2025, had stated that every schools in Malaysia must have a quality principal or leader, http://www.moe.gov.my/userfiles/file/PPP/Preliminary-Blueprint-BM.pdf. . It is a significant that government and Malaysian aware about the important of quality principal toward school and student achievement. That also mean include rural school especially in Sarawak. According to Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister Office, Datuk Mohd. Naroden Majais from http://www.theborneopost.com/2012/06/30/pencapaian-akademik-bukti-tahap-pendidikan-meningkat/ was a prove that Sarawak’s school also not left behind in educational development. Nowadays, Sarawak’s student performance and achievements same level with Peninsular student. In addition, Shahril Haji Marzuki (2005) in his study emphasis that appointment system in Malaysia is based on the principal seniority in service and experience as a teacher.

Furthermore, Lokman Mohd. Tahir  et al. (2008) acknowledge that a lacking of detailed studies about the influence of background factors on the principals leadership style, especially leadership in Malaysia education context. Society places high expectations on the school in an effort to produce quality student of knowledgeable, skilled and morally upright. To realize the aspirations of the country, principals are civil servants responsible for leading the school to function more organize and effective.

         Then, the purpose of this study is to determine leadership styles among secondary school principal in the state of Sarawak. The successful secondary school in Sarawak will be the subject to finalize the impact of leadership style toward it achievement. This is to make sure that Malaysia Education Development Plan can be achieve and make successful school leaderships’ style as a role model.
